Michael "Mickey" Kantor (born August 7, 1939 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

biography

Mickey Kantor studied at Vanderbilt University , where he graduated in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in economics . As a result, he served four years in the US Navy and reached the rank of lieutenant . In 1968 he earned the Doctor of Laws at the Law Center of Georgetown University , after which he began to practice as a lawyer in Florida .

Kantor began his political engagement in the election campaigns of the Democratic presidential candidates George McGovern in 1972, Jimmy Carter in 1976 and 1980 and Walter Mondale in 1984. At times he was also on the election campaign team of Jerry Brown , who failed in the party preselection in 1976 and 1980. In 1992 he was finally the campaign manager of Bill Clinton for his successful presidential candidacy .

After Clinton was sworn in as President of the United States on January 20, 1993 , Kantor was appointed to the Clinton administration as United States commercial agent with cabinet rank . In this position he earned the reputation of an energetic and combative negotiator, especially with Japanese government officials, with whom he reached a highly competitive compromise agreement on the automotive industry in the mid-1990s .

On April 12, 1996 he was appointed Commerce Secretary by Clinton to succeed Ron Brown, who had died in a plane crash in Croatia . As a member of the government, he played a convincing role in Congress approving the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) . He also achieved success in expanding US companies' access to global markets.

Kantor was replaced in January 1997 by William M. Daley as Minister of Commerce. He has since worked in Washington, DC for the Chicago- based international law firm Mayer Brown .
