Osman Turan

Osman Turan (* 1914 in Çaykara , Trabzon , † January 17, 1978 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish politician and historian who dealt particularly with Seljuk history.

Life

Osman Turan was born in 1914 in the village of Soğanlı, the son of Hasan Ağa, who later fell in the First World War . He attended middle school in Bayburt and high school in Trabzon and Ankara . He graduated in 1940 from the Faculty of Philology as well as Historical and Geographical Sciences at the University of Ankara , which was founded in 1935 . He was one of the first students of Mehmet Fuat Köprülü at the Chair of Medieval History. Turan doctorate in 1941 on " Oniki Hayvanlı Türk Takvimi " gained in 1944 with the work " Orta Turk Zaman Devletlerinde Türkçe Unvanlar " (see. Earthly Branches ) the degree "docent" and in 1951 Professor.

After joining the Democrat Parti , which was co-founded by Mehmet Fuat Köprülü , he was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1954 as a member of the Trabzon Province . In 1959 at the Kurultai of the Turkic Ocakları election as Secretary-General. After the coup of May 27, 1960 and a stay of about 17 months in prison, he was acquitted in the Yassıada trials . In 1965 he moved back to parliament as Adalet Partisi MP and was elected General Secretary of Türk Ocakları in 1966. In the parliamentary elections in 1969 he succeeded in entering parliament, this time for the Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi , whereupon he withdrew from politics.

Osman Turan, who had been married to Emine Satıa Hanım, granddaughter of Abdülhamid II since 1956 , died on January 17, 1978 of a cerebral hemorrhage .
