Carla Anderson Hills (born January 3, 1934 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American university teacher , politician and manager .

biography

After attending school she studied at St Hilda's College of Oxford University and then at Stanford University , where she in 1955 a Bachelor of Arts acquired (AB). She then studied law at Yale Law School , graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). In 1959 she was admitted to the bar in California and between 1962 and 1974 was a partner in the law firm Munger, Tolles, Hills & Rickershauser . In 1972 she was also appointed professor at the University of California in Los Angeles; since 1974 she has also been the curator of Pomona College . She has also been a member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation since 1974 .

In 1974 she became assistant to the United States Attorney General for civil law ( Civil Division ). On March 10, 1975 their appeal was made to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development ( Secretary of Housing and Urban Development ) by US President Gerald Ford , whose Cabinet she belonged to the end of Ford's term of office on 20 January 1977th

She then left politics and became a lawyer at Latham & Watkins , a law firm with around 1,800 lawyers in twelve cities with its headquarters in Los Angeles. In 1989 she was reappointed to the government by President George Bush as a trade representative of the United States and was a member until the end of Bush's term on January 20, 1993.

Activities in companies

Carla Hills finally resigned from government policy in 1993 and then went into the private sector , where she was initially a board member of the Chevron Corporation from 1993 to 2000 and since 1996 of Lucent Technologies . Between 2000 and 2003 she was also a board member of Chevron Texaco and 2001 to 2006 of the American International Group and Time Warner . At times she was also a board member of American Airlines and IBM and has been a member of the board of Gilead Sciences since 2007 .

She is also vice chair of the American Enterprise Institute's advisory board on legal policy , vice chair of the international advisory board of the Center for Strategic and International Studies , member of the board of trustees of the Council on Foreign Relations and several other institutes and foundations.

Carla Hills was married to Roderick M. Hills from 1958 until his death in late October 2014, who was chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 1975 to 1977 .

Appreciation

In 1975, Carla Hills was named Person of the Year by Time Magazine . This appreciation was not aimed specifically at her person, but for American women in general. In addition to the minister at the time, Betty Ford , Ella T. Grasso , Barbara Jordan , Susie Sharp , Jill Conway , Billie Jean King , Susan Brownmiller , Addie L. Wyatt , Kathleen Byerly , Carol Sutton and Alison Cheek were singled out as representatives.
