Roderick M. Hills

Roderick Maltman Hills (* 9. March 1931 in Seattle , Washington ; † 29. October 2014 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American lawyer , politician of the Republican Party and business leaders , the 1975-1977 chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission ( Securities and Exchange Commission ) .

Life

Hills first completed an undergraduate degree at Stanford University after attending school , from which he graduated in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Law School of Stanford University, he finished in 1955 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). During his studies he joined the Zeta Psi academic association . He was then between 1955 and 1957 employee (Law Clerk) of Stanley Forman Reed , a judge at the US Supreme Court .

Hills then joined the Los Angeles- based law firm Musick Peeler & Garrett as a salaried attorney in 1957 and worked there until 1962. In addition, he began in 1960 working as a guest lecturer ( Visiting Lecturer ) of Law at Stanford Law School and taught there until 1970. In 1962 he joined as a partner in the resident also in Los Angeles law firm Munger, Great, Hills & Ricker Hauser and belonged this to 1971 on. He also held a professorship at Harvard University between 1969 and 1970 .

In 1975 Hills was appointed by President Gerald Ford to succeed Ray Garrett as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission SEC, the United States' banking regulator. He held this position until the end of Ford's tenure and was then replaced by Harold M. Williams .

After leaving the government, Hills switched to the private sector and was initially a member of the supervisory board of the brewery group Anheuser-Busch from 1977 to 1989 . At the same time, he was a partner from 1978 to 1982 and then a consultant from 1982 to 1984 at Latham & Watkins , a major law firm with 1,800 lawyers in twelve branches and headquartered in Los Angeles.

Hills, who was also a member of the supervisory board of ICN Pharmaceuticals and worked for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), founded Hills Enterprises Ltd. in 1987 . his own company and has also been a partner of Hills & Stern since 1995 . He was also a member of the board of directors of the waste management company Waste Management from 1997 to 2000 and of the board of Chiquita Brands International , one of the largest banana producers in the world, between 2002 and 2007 . He was also a trustee of the Gerald R. Ford Foundation and a member of the Order of the Coif association .

Hills had been married to Carla Anderson Hills since 1958 , who was, among other things, Minister of Construction from 1975 to 1977 during the tenure of President Gerald Ford and later under President George Bush from 1989 to 1993 US Trade Representative .
