Walter J. "Jay" Clayton is a US business attorney and, since May 4, 2017, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission .

His professional career has focused on mergers and initial public offerings. Prior to joining the government, he was a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell and was in charge of several major stock market projects. Among other things, he prepared the IPO of the online retailer Alibaba and was involved in the purchase of bonds from the investment bank Lehman Brothers to the major bank Barclays .

In January 2017 it was announced that Donald Trump , at that time designated president of the United States , Clayton as chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission Securities and Exchange Commission proposed (SEC). The Senate confirmed on May 2, 2017 . Jay Clayton became Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission on May 4, 2017. He is the 32nd chairman of the agency and succeeds Mary Jo White , who announced after the election of Trump that she would step down from office at the end of the Obama administration .
