Mary Schapiro

Mary L. Schapiro (born June 19, 1955 in New York City ) is an American financial expert. She was the 29th chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission SEC .

Schapiro was appointed by US President Barack Obama and unanimously approved by the United States Senate. She took over the chairmanship on January 27, 2009 and held this position until December 14, 2012. This made her the first woman to hold this position permanently. In 2012 Forbes Magazine ranked her 65th in the list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World on the grounds:

Career

She graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster (Pennsylvania) in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology . In 1980 George Washington University awarded her a Juris Doctor degree . In addition to her employment in the public service of the federal government (United States) in Washington, she worked, among other things, on the board of directors of Kraft Foods and Duke Energy as director and previously for the trust administration of her University Franklin & Marshall.

Schapiro has worked since 1988 for the SEC as agents and in various positions of the regulators of the financial sector in the governments of Ronald Reagan , George Bush and Bill Clinton . From 1994 to 1996 she served as chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission . From 2006 to early 2009, she was chairman and CEO of the Financial Supervisory Authority ( FINRA ), a self-governing licensing agency similar to a public agency for overseeing brokers trading in securities and bills of exchange in the United States .

In March 2013, she became the Director in the Board of Directors of General Electric nominated. In April 2013, it was announced that she would work as a director at the management consultancy Promontory Financial Group in Washington , which advises clients in the financial industry on regulatory issues. She now works for one of those private companies that she was supposed to oversee before.

She is married and has two kids.
