Waste Management ( WM ) is an American company founded in 1968 by Wayne Huizenga, Dean Buntrock and Larry Beck with headquarters in Houston , Texas , which is active in the field of waste management . The company's shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and are listed on the S&P 500 stock index.

Waste Management operates 103 recycling facilities and 244 landfills (including 5 hazardous waste landfills ) in the United States as of December 2019.

The landfill gas from 124 of the landfills operated by the company is processed and the methane content it contains is marketed for power generation or as a substitute fuel for industrial processes or fed to local natural gas networks . The American Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies landfill gas as a form of renewable energy .

The company operates facilities in all US states except Montana , as well as the District of Columbia and parts of Canada .

The operations in Puerto Rico and the Atlantic provinces in Canada were sold in 2014; likewise the subsidiary Wheelabrator Technologies , which operates waste incineration plants. 8,924 vehicles in the company's garbage truck fleet are natural gas vehicles .

Waste Management is the largest private waste management company in the United States, followed by Republic Services , based in Phoenix , Arizona .
