Republic Services is a US waste disposal company headquartered in Phoenix , Arizona . The company handles the disposal of solid and non-hazardous waste from residential and commercial operations in the United States and Puerto Rico and operates landfills and recycling facilities . Republic Services was founded in 1996 and took over competitor Allied Waste Industries in 2008 . Republic Services was originally part of the Republic Industries group, which focused on the automotive trade from 1998 and republic Services sold through an IPO. Republic Industries now operates as AutoNation . The disposal company came under fire because it operates a landfill with radioactive waste , more or less kept secret in St. Louis . There are protests from residents against this landfill to this day, as there is an increased cancer rate in the area .

Republic Services was ranked 296 in the Fortune 500 list of the top-selling US companies in 2018. After competitor Waste Management , Republic Services is the second largest privately owned company in the United States that deals exclusively with waste management services. The 2019 Fleet Owner 500 list, which includes the largest fleet operators in the United States - excluding logistics companies - ranks Republic Services in eighth place. Accordingly, Republic Services has the eighth largest fleet of all US companies with over 18,600 vehicles.
