AutoNation, Inc. is a Fort Lauderdale , Florida- based auto trading group. It was originally founded as Republic Industries, Inc. in 1996 by entrepreneur H. Wayne Huizinga . In 1999, with the focus on the pure auto business, the name was changed to AutoNation. Before that, Republic Industries was mainly active in waste management , but separated from this area, which is now known as Republic Services , but in 1998 through an IPO .
AutoNation is the largest auto dealer for new and used vehicles in the United States . AutoNation, Inc. operates 355 new car dealerships for 37 car brands in the form of franchises at 278 locations in 18 US states .
With more than $ 19 billion in annual sales and over 627,000 new and used vehicles sold annually , AutoNation outperforms every other provider in this market. AutoNation ranks 112th in the Fortune 500 list for 2005. AutoNation is also listed in the S&P 500 index.
