Latham & Watkins [ ˌleɪθəm‿ən‿ˈwɒtkɪnz ] is a global law firm and one of the largest in the world.
Founded in Los Angeles in 1934 , the firm now advises over 2,700 lawyers in 30 offices worldwide on all aspects of commercial law . In Germany , Latham & Watkins is represented by around 170 professionals in Hamburg , Frankfurt am Main , Munich and Düsseldorf .
history
Dana Latham and Paul Watkins founded the law firm in January 1934 in Los Angeles . Latham specialized in tax law and later became the head of the United States Federal Tax Service under President Dwight D. Eisenhower , while Watkins worked primarily in labor law .
The law firm grew slowly from three to 19 lawyers in 1960 and 46 in 1970, during which time the law firm also established its internal committees through which employed lawyers are to participate in firm decisions.
Jack Walker became managing partner of the firm in 1988 and expanded it, among other things with new offices in other locations. From 1994 to 2014, Robert Dell, as successor in this position, continued to expand the company by tripling the number of professionals, although the firm's growth path was impaired by the economic crisis of 2008 . During this time, the partners' profits fell by around 20 percent, which is why Latham & Watkins laid off 190 lawyers and 250 employees in 2009.
Since then, Latham & Watkins has grown again under the management of Bill Voge and Richard M. Trobmann , so that today over 2,700 lawyers are active worldwide in the USA , Europe , Asia and the Middle East . The law firm is one of the best-selling law firms in the world.
