Century City (Los Angeles)

Century City is an approximately 71 hectare commercial and residential district in the west of the Californian metropolis Los Angeles . The well-known film studio 20th Century Fox has its headquarters here.

Century City is within the city limits of Los Angeles and is bordered to the northwest by the borough of Westwood , to West Los Angeles to the southwest, to Cheviot Hills to the southeast, and to Beverly Hills to the northeast.

Century City is a major business hub that is home to many law firms and service companies - especially those with ties to the entertainment, music, and film industries. The district is characterized by the many high-rise buildings and skyscrapers that are otherwise only found in downtown Los Angeles in such a concentration .

History and planning

The district was gradually built from the early 1960s on an earlier backlot from 20th Century Fox. One of the first buildings is the Century Plaza Hotel , built in 1966 , which was placed on the list of the US's Most Endangered Historic Buildings by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009 after the owner announced its demolition. The many skyscrapers of Century City are a stark contrast to the otherwise flat development in the adjacent districts. In the 1960s, some of the first new high-rise buildings were erected in Century City after the earthquake-induced height restrictions for buildings were lifted.
