The honorary title of Honored Teacher of the People was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of an order with a certificate and a bonus. Founded on January 31, 1949, this title could be awarded 40 times a year to teachers, teachers, educators and educational scientists in state organs or parties. The prerequisite for the award was that the entrusted had distinguished himself for particular successes in his work in the sense of socialist upbringing and training of young people in connection with exemplary engagement in political and social activity.

According to the publications in Neues Deutschland, the honorary title was awarded to 1,531 people. The award has been made (with a few exceptions) since its creation in 1951 on June 12, Teacher's Day .

Appearance

The oval, gold-plated medal shows the embossed relief image of Adolph Diesterweg on its obverse, surrounded by a laurel wreath, which hugs the outer edges of the medal. The reverse of the medal shows the same laurel border as well as the recessed outlines of two laurel branches and the inscription: MERITTER / LEHRER / DES / VOLKES . This included the year of the award until 1958, which was replaced by the GDR's national coat of arms from 1978. The medal was worn on the upper left side of the chest on a 20 mm wide bow in the German colors: black, red and gold.
