Gregory G. Garre (born November 1, 1964 in Berwyn , Chester County , Pennsylvania ) is an American lawyer and former United States Solicitor General .

biography

After attending school, he first studied administration at Dartmouth College , where he graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Government). He then completed a postgraduate degree in law at the Law Center of George Washington University in 1991 with a Juris Doctor (JD). After that, he was first secretary ( Clerk ) of Anthony Joseph Scirica , a judge on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals based in Philadelphia from 1992 to 1993 by William H. Rehnquist , the Chief Justice . In 1994 he became a partner in the law firm Hogan & Hartson , the oldest and largest law firm in Washington, DC , and practiced there after his admission to the bar in the District of Columbia on February 4, 1994-2000.

In 2000, he joined the United States Department of Justice , where he was assistant to Solicitor General Seth P. Waxman . After leaving in 2004, he initially returned to the law firm Hogan & Hartson as a partner. In 2005 he first became Deputy Solicitor General and in 2008 initially took over the office of Solicitor General before US President George W. Bush appointed him Solicitor General in June 2008. He held this position until the end of Bush's tenure in January 2009.

After retiring from government, Gregory Garre became a partner in the law firm Latham & Watkins .
