Neal Katyal

Neal Kumar Katyal (born March 12, 1970 ) is an American lawyer . Between May 17, 2010 and June 9, 2011, he served as the United States Solicitor General , representing the federal government before the United States Supreme Court . In this office he succeeded Elena Kagan provisionally , who was nominated by US President Barack Obama as a judge for the Supreme Court of the United States.

Katyal is the son of Indian immigrants. He attended Dartmouth College until 1991 and then studied at Yale Law School until 1995 . He later worked for Stephen Breyer , a Supreme Court Justice. He was one of Al Gore's attorneys on the Bush v. Gore before the Supreme Court, which ruled the 2000 US presidential election in favor of George W. Bush . In 2003 he represented the rectors of the most important private law schools before the Supreme Court in the Grutter v. Bollinger .

Katyal is Professor of Law at Georgetown University and has been a visiting professor at Harvard University and Yale University . In 2006 he was named “Lawyer of the Year” by Lawyers USA . American Lawyer magazine also named him one of the 50 best attorneys, Washingtonian Magazine one of the 30 best attorneys on the Supreme Court, and the Legal Times one of the top 90 attorneys in the last 30 years. In 2004 he won the Pro Bono Award from the National Law Journal .

On January 24, 2011, Donald Verrilli was nominated by President Obama as the new Solicitor General . After confirmation by the Senate , he replaced Katyal in office in June of the same year. This now acts as his first deputy ( Principal Deputy Solicitor General ).

Neal Katyal is the brother of Sonia Katyal , a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley , and the brother-in-law of Jeffrey Rosen , a law professor at George Washington University .
