Donald Beaton Verrilli (born June 29, 1957 in New Rochelle , New York ) is an American lawyer and former Solicitor General of the United States .

biography

In 1957 Donald Verrilli was born in New Rochelle to Donald and Rose Marie Verrilli. He and his parents moved to Wilton , Connecticut , where he graduated from Wilton High School in 1975 . He received his Bachelor of Arts in 1979 from Yale University and his Juris Doctor in 1983 from Columbia University . After graduation, he served as an advisor to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit Judge , J. Skelly Wright , and William Joseph Brennan , Associate Justice at the United States Supreme Court .

Verilli is married to Gail W. Laster, a lawyer. They have a daughter together.

Career as a lawyer

Verrilli joined the law firm Jenner & Block , where he became a lawyer. There he specialized in telecommunications and media law as well as the first amendment to the constitution . During his time at Jenner & Block he represented a. a. the Recording Industry Association of America in the cases of MGM v. Grokster and Capitol v. Thomas to the Supreme Court. Viacom he represented in 2007 in the process Viacom v. Google there . During his tenure as a lawyer at Jenner & Block, he served on more than 100 cases pending before the Supreme Court, including twelve as a representative at the hearing.

Promotion to Solicitor General

President Barack Obama appointed him Assistant Deputy Attorney General in early 2009 . In 2010 he finally moved to the White House as an advisor to Barack Obama. After Elena Kagan was appointed judge at the Supreme Court, Verrilli was considered the most promising successor. First, however, Neal Katyal was temporarily entrusted with the administration of the office. On January 26, 2011, Obama finally nominated Verrilli as the new United States Solicitor General. On May 12, 2011, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 17-1 in favor of Verrilli. The Senate confirmed the nomination on June 6, 2011 with 72 to 16 votes. On June 9, 2011, Verrilli was officially inducted into office.

He made his most important appearance in the proceedings before the Supreme Court of the United States , in which it came to the negotiation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act .

In June 2016, Verrilli announced his resignation.
