Orlow W. Chapman (born January 7, 1832 in Ellington , Connecticut , † January 19, 1890 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician , lawyer and United States Solicitor General .

biography

After attending school, he studied at Union College in Schenectady , graduating in 1854. He then worked as a lecturer in languages at the Fergusonville Academy in Delaware County and was also admitted to the bar in New York State in 1856 .

Between 1862 and 1868 he served as a District Attorney in Binghamton . Chapman, who was a member of the Republican Party , served in the New York Senate for the 24th legislature from 1870 to 1871 . He was then from 1872 to 1876 Superintendent of the New York Insurance Department .

In May 1889, Orlow W. Chapman was appointed Solicitor General by US President Benjamin Harrison . He held this post, the third most important in the United States Department of Justice , until his death in January 1890.
