Holmes Conrad

Holmes Conrad (born January 31, 1840 in Winchester , Virginia , † September 4, 1915 ibid) was an American lawyer , politician and United States Solicitor General .

biography

The son of the future Attorney General of Virginia, Robert Young Conrad , trained at the Virginia Military Institute after attending Winchester Academy and served as a major in the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War . After the war he continued his studies at the University of Virginia where she received in 1866 for admission as a lawyer in the state of Virginia. After several years as a lawyer, he was elected as a representative of the Democratic Party in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1878 and was a member until 1882.

In 1893 he became a member of the Justice Department of the United States and was initially assistant to the US Attorney General until 1895 . In February 1895, Conrad was appointed Solicitor General by US President Grover Cleveland and held this third highest position within the US Department of Justice until July 1897.

He was then a lecturer in English law at Georgetown University .
