Henry M. Hoyt
Henry Martyn Hoyt, Jr. (born December 5, 1856 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , † November 20, 1910 in Washington, DC ) was an American lawyer and United States Solicitor General .
biography
Hoyt was the son of attorney Henry Hoyt , who was governor of Pennsylvania from 1879 to 1883 .
He himself studied after school at Yale University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1878 . A subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania he completed in 1881. After his admission to the bar in the state of Pennsylvania, he worked as a lawyer before he was from 1883 to 1886 assistant to the treasurer of the US National Bank of New York . After that, he initially served as Treasurer ( Treasurer ) and then from 1890 to 1893 as president of the Investment Company of Philadelphia . In the following years he was again a lawyer.
In 1897 he became a member of the United States Department of Justice and was assistant to the US Attorney General until 1903 . In February 1903, US President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him Solicitor General and thus the third highest officer in the US Department of Justice. He held this position until the end of Roosevelt's tenure in March 1909.
Most recently he was from March 1909 until his death in November 1910 legal advisor ( Counselor ) in the US State Department .
