Charles Evans Hughes Junior
Charles Evans Hughes Jr. (born November 30, 1889 in New York City , † January 21, 1950 ) was an American lawyer and United States Solicitor General .
biography
Hughes was the son of Charles Evans Hughes , later New York Governor , United States Secretary of State and Chief Justice .
He himself studied first at Brown University in Providence and then completed postgraduate studies in law from 1909 to 1913 at the Law School of Harvard University . During his studies he was also an editor of the Harvard Law Review . After being admitted to the lawyer in the state of New York in 1913, he was from 1914 to 1916 clerk ( Clerk ) from Benjamin N. Cardozo , a judge of the Court of Appeals of the State of New York (New York Court of Appeals ) and later associate judge on the US Supreme Court .
During the First World War, he did his military service from 1917 to 1918 as a second lieutenant ( 2nd Lieutenant ) in the US Army . After returning from the war, he began practicing law with the Carter, Hughes & Cravath law firm .
In May 1929, US President Herbert C. Hoover appointed Charles E. Hughes Jr. as Solicitor General. He held this position of the third most important function in the United States Department of Justice for almost a year until April 1930. He then returned to the law firm Carter, Hughes & Cravath, where he worked as a lawyer until his death.
His eldest son was the architect Charles Evans Hughes III, while his second son, H. Stuart Hughes, became a recognized historian and university professor .
