Lawrence Maxwell Jr. (born May 4, 1853 in Glasgow , Scotland , † February 18, 1927 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and United States Solicitor General .

biography

After attending Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Maxwell, who came from a Scottish immigrant family, studied at the University of Michigan , where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1874 . A subsequent postgraduate study of law at the Law School of the University of Cincinnati he completed in 1875. After admission to the lawyer in the state of Ohio, he was initially a partner of the law firm King & Maxwell Thompson and then from 1884 until his death in 1927, the firm Ramsey, Maxwell & Matthews.

In April 1893, Lawrence Maxwell was appointed Solicitor General by US President Grover Cleveland and thus held the third most important office in the United States Department of Justice for almost two years until January 1895 . After retiring from government service in 1896, in addition to his legal work until 1912, he also accepted a position as professor of law at the Law School of the University of Cincinnati. Between 1909 and 1916 he was also a lecturer at the Law School of the University of Michigan .
