J. Lee Rankin

James Lee Rankin (born July 7, 1907 in Hartington , Cedar County , Nebraska , † June 28, 1996 in Santa Cruz , California ) was an American lawyer , professor and United States Solicitor General .

biography

After attending the High School of Lincoln , he studied from 1924 to 1928 at the University of Nebraska and received his a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed a subsequent post-graduate degree in law at the Law School of the University of Nebraska in 1930. After his admission to the bar in Nebraska, he initially worked as a lawyer in the law firm Beghtol & Foe and then between 1935 and 1953 partner of the law firm Beghtol & Rankin.

In 1953, Rankin, who was a member of the Republican Party, was an employee in the United States Department of Justice and served as an assistant to the United States Attorney General ( Assistant Attorney General ) head of the Office of Legal Counsel . In August 1956 he was appointed Solicitor General by US President Dwight D. Eisenhower and thus took third place in the US Department of Justice until the end of Eisenhower's presidency in January 1961.

He then worked as a university professor for US constitutional law at the Law School of New York University .

After the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy , J. Lee Rankin was appointed chief advisor to the Warren Commission in 1963 and was a member of the Warren Commission until the final report was presented in September 1964. He was most recently 1966-1972 legal counsel for corporations ( Corporation ) of New York City .
