Charles Fried (born April 15, 1935 in Prague ) is an American lawyer , attorney , professor at Harvard Law School and former United States Solicitor General .

Life

Charles Fried was born in the former Czechoslovakia in 1935 . In 1948 he became a US citizen. He attended Lawrenceville School , received his Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University, and graduated from the University of Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in 1958 and a Master of Laws in 1960 . Also in 1960 he received the degree of Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School .

Fried initially served as a legal advisor and attorney at various US courts, including the United States Supreme Court and several United States Court of Appeals, as well as the Federal District Court of Appeals .

In 1981 he began working for the US government as an advisor in the Department of Transportation . In 1982 he became an advisor to President Ronald Reagan and in 1983 he served the same position in the Justice Department . From 1984 to 1985 he was Assistant to the United States Attorney General . Charles Fried also became Deputy United States Solicitor General . In October 1985, Ronald Reagan appointed him United States Solicitor General. In this position, Fried represented the US government in 25 cases before the US Supreme Court. With the end of Reagan's tenure, Fried returned from government to Harvard Law School.

From September 1995 to June 1999, in addition to teaching at Harvard, he was a judge at the Supreme Court of Massachusetts . On July 1, 1999, he became a full-time member and professor at Harvard Law School. There he lectured on legal remedies , commercial law , constitutional law , contract law , criminal law , labor law , the federal courts of the United States , tort law , legal philosophy and ethics , and medical ethics .

Charles Fried has published seven books and over 30 articles in specialist journals. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1997) and the American Law Institute .
