Hayes Alvis

Hayes Alvis (* 1. May 1907 in Chicago ; † 29. December 1972 in New York City ) was an American jazz - bassist and tuba player of Swing .

Hayes Alvis began his professional career as a drummer, but then switched to bass and tuba when he worked for Jelly Roll Morton in 1927/28 . His career began in the drum corps of the Chicago Defender Boys Concert Band alongside Lionel Hampton and Sid Catlett . He also played tuba with Earl Hines in 1928/30 and arranged for his band ("Blue Nights"). In 1931 he moved to New York and worked with Jimmie Noone in the Mills Blue Rhythm Band from 1931 to 1934, where he also acted as road manager . A very early double bass solo by Alvis can be heard on a recording from 1932 ("Rhythm Spasm"). Alvis occasionally played baritone saxophone in this formation and was their tour manager. From 1935 to 1938 Alvis was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra , where he worked with befriended bassist and tuba player Billy Taylor .

After his time at Ellington he briefly had his own band with Freddy Jenkins , with whom he appeared in the revue Blackbird in 1938 ; then Alvis worked in Benny Carter's band, in 1939 with Joe Sullivan and Leonard Feathers All-Star Jam Band and in 1940/41 with Louis Armstrong (in whose ensemble he replaced Pops Foster ). From 1942 to 1945 he played in a US Army band that was directed by Sy Oliver . After the Second World War he worked for Dave Martin until 1947 , after which he was a resident musician at the New York jazz club Cafe Society for many years . After professional times outside of the music scene, when he ran an interior decoration business and went to the merchant marine, he returned to the jazz scene in the 1950s and played in various swing and Dixieland revival bands, such as Wilbur De Paris . In the early 1970s he played in a trio with Jay McShann and Tiny Grimes .
