A gauntlet boot is a piece of footwear that covers the calf with wide cuffs, the gauntlets. This boot shape, which was worn in the 17th century, developed like the cup boots from the long boots of the 16th century Landsknecht costume called leather boots, which were attached to the belt and also worn folded down as misshapen gauntlets.

In the early part of the Thirty Years War , the cup shape was decisive. By the middle of the century, however, the boots became lower and lower and took on quite elegant shapes. Together with the edges of the stockings, decorated with lace cuffs and thus filling the wide cuffs, they finally became an object of luxury. This was accompanied by the increasing fashionable importance of the heels known since the end of the 16th century.
