Charlene Barshefsky (born August 11, 1950 ) is an American business manager and former sales representative for the United States .

Life

After attending school, she studied English and political science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA English & Political Science). She then completed a postgraduate degree in law at the Catholic University of America with a Juris Doctor (JD). After being admitted to the bar, she worked as a lawyer .

Barshevsky first became Deputy Commercial Agent for the United States in 1993 and took over the office of Commercial Agent in 1996, after the previous commercial agent Mickey Kantor became Minister of Commerce on April 12, 1996 as the successor to Ron Brown, who was killed in a plane crash .

In 1997 she officially assumed the office of US Trade Representative and was a member of the cabinet of US President Bill Clinton until the end of his term in 2001.

She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Estée Lauder Companies and has been a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr law firm in Washington, DC since 2007. She is also vice chairman of the international law department of the American Bar Association .
