Donald Louis Evans (born July 27, 1946 in Houston , Texas ) is an American businessman and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of Commerce under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005 .

Life

Evans attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering (1969) and a Master of Business Administration (1973). During his university days he was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Brotherhood.

In 1975 Evans left Houston and moved to Midland , where he started working for Tom Brown Inc. , a large energy company; ten years later, he took over the company and ran it until he joined the Bush cabinet in 2001 .

He is married to Susan Marinis Evans and has two daughters, a son and a granddaughter with her.

Political career

In 1995 Evans was appointed a board member of the University of Texas System by then Texas Governor Bush, and for the last four years until January 2001 he was also chairman of the board. For eight years he served on the board of directors of the Scleroderma Research Foundation , the driving force behind Native Vision , a program that provides services to 10,000 indigenous people, and worked with United Way , a US group of charities.

Evans led Governor Bush's 1994 and 1998 election campaigns in Texas, as well as Bush and Dick Cheney's national campaign in the 2000 presidential election . On January 20, 2001, the longtime friend of George W. Bush was sworn in as the 34th US Secretary of Commerce.

In the 2004 State of the Union Address Evans was Designated Survivor . At events where a large number of members are gathered, at least one person stays away to serve as acting president in the event of a disaster (see also 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution ).

On November 9, 2004, he announced that he would no longer serve in Bush's second term; on February 7, 2005, his successor Carlos Gutierrez was sworn in.

Further career

On December 20, 2005, he turned down an offer for a top position in the Russian oil company Rosneft , which he should have led to an IPO, on the grounds that he had too little time.

Political positions and goals

Republican Evans believes in the forces of a liberalized market and corporate responsibility: “ I believe that it is not the government that should make prosperity, but the people. "

At the international level, during his tenure as Minister of Commerce, he campaigned for the dismantling of trade restrictions in order to secure America's claim to leadership in the world market. His official trips took him to 26 countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan , to promote American exports and the opening of markets. Evans led US trade delegations in talks with Russia , Mexico , China, and African and South American countries.
