Peter George Peterson

Peter George Peterson (born June 5, 1926 in Kearney , Nebraska , † March 20, 2018 in New York City ) was an American manager and politician .

Life

Peterson was born in the United States to Greek immigrants. He therefore had both Greek and US citizenship. After attending Kearney High School , he studied at Northwestern University from 1942 to 1947 , graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree summa cum laude . He then completed a postgraduate course in business administration at the University of Chicago , which he completed in 1951 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

He subsequently worked for several companies before becoming Vice President of Bell & Howell in 1958 and then President in 1961. He was then Chairman of the Board of Management and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) between 1963 and 1971 . From 1971 to 1972 he was initially assistant to US President Richard Nixon for international economic affairs.

February 29, 1972 Peterson was Nixon as Secretary of Commerce ( Secretary of Commerce ) in the Cabinet appointed; However, he was only a member of this until February 1, 1973.

He then left government politics and returned to the private sector , where he was chairman of the board from 1973 to 1977 and CEO of Lehman Brothers from 1973 to 1984 . He was also a board member of 3M , Black & Decker , Citgo , The Continental Group, Federated Department Stores (FDS), General Foods , Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and Sony . In 1985 he founded the investment company Blackstone Group with Stephen A. Schwarzman , of which he was Senior Chairman until 2008. At the same time he was Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2000 to 2004 .

Peterson was also active in social and socio-political activities and, in particular, from 1985 to 2007 chaired the Council on Foreign Relations . He was also curator ( trustee ) of the Committee for Economic Development, a board member of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, founding president of the Institute for International Economics (IIE), a board member of the National Bureau of Economic Research , curator of the Museum of Modern Art and a board member of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation . With a fortune in the billions, he was one of the richest Greeks.

In 2006 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
