Rebecca Blank

Rebecca M. Blank (born September 19, 1955 in Minneapolis – Saint Paul ) is an American economist and politician of the Democratic Party . She has been the incumbent Deputy Minister of Commerce since July 2011 and officially appointed Deputy Minister of Commerce since October 21, 2011 . After the leave of absence of Trade Minister John Bryson for health reasons on June 11, 2012 and his officially declared resignation on June 21, she has temporarily taken over his office.

Rebecca Blank holds a summa cum laude degree in economics from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She held professorships at Princeton University (1983–1989), MIT (1988–1989) and Northwestern University (1989–1999). From 1998 to 1999 she was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers .

In 2005 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
