Stuart Broomer

Stuart Broomer is a Canadian jazz pianist and music critic.

Broomer studied piano and composition with Samuel Dolin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. In 1976 he recorded the album Conversation Pieces with saxophonist Bill Smith . At the Sound of Toronto Jazz Festival in 1977 he appeared with the Stuart Broomer Quartet (with Bill Smith and Maury Coles and drummer John Mars ). He continued the formation as Trio Broomer, Mars & Smith until 1980 . In 1980 Smith also dropped out, and the duo Stuart Broomer & John Mars recorded their debut album Annihilated Surprise in 1983 , which was re-released 16 years later.

The duo broke up in 1986, and Broomer came out mainly as a music critic in the following years. His articles appeared a. a. at Toronto Globe and Mail , Musicworks , Signal to Noise , Down Beat , Cadence and the jazz magazine Coda , which he also edited at times. He is particularly interested in the music of Anthony Braxton , about whom he wrote the book Time and Anthony Braxton . He wrote the liner notes for several of his albums, as well as albums and the like. a. by Julius Hemphill , Heinz Geisser , Joëlle Léandre , Roscoe Mitchell , Lauren Newton and Simon Nabatov .
