Bill Smith (saxophonist)

William Ernest "Bill" Smith (born May 12, 1938 in Bristol ) is a Canadian jazz musician (saxophone, also drums), publisher, photographer, author and music producer of British origin.

Live and act

Smith played the trumpet while studying aviation ; In 1963 he emigrated to Canada. There he worked full-time as art director until 2001 and (since 1967) as editor of Coda Magazine . His photographs and articles appeared not only there but also in other publications.

In 1968 he was also a co-founder of the record label Sackville Recordings . He also took lessons and increasingly appeared as a musician; he directed the Bill Smith Ensemble and worked a. a. with Anthony Braxton / The Composers and Improvisors Ochestra ( Composition 96 , 1981), David Prentice , Wolfgang Fuchs , Joe McPhee , Wadada Leo Smith , De Zes Winden and Tony Wilson . In the field of jazz he was involved in 20 recording sessions between 1976 and 2000.
