history
The organization was founded in 1970 and in 2017 employs more than 500 scientists, lawyers and other specialists. The goal of the NRDC is to preserve the natural environment. It combats urban sprawl , pollution and the destruction of animal habitats. It promotes measures to mitigate global warming and the use of renewable energies . With the help of lobbyists , the NRDC asserts its influence in the US Congress and also with high officials.
In 2001, the BioGems initiative was launched to mobilize people affected by the destruction of ecosystems .
At the end of 2001, a report was published on the environmental and health effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .
The organization is one of the few large environmental organizations that continues to support local groups and activists in New Orleans in eliminating the consequences of Hurricane Katrina .
In December 2006, Green Day and the NRDC launched a website to promote awareness of the US's dependence on oil . At the same time, the NRDC rejects the expansion of the use of nuclear energy .
The organization operates seven individual projects with different priorities. In the United States , it has around 1.4 million members.
Judiciary
Lawsuits against companies and government agencies that are not on the Clean Air Act of the California Air Resources Board or the Clean Water Act have held, led to some important decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States . Most of these decisions were against the NRDC; see the case of Chevron USA v. Natural Resources Defense Council .
