Byard Lancaster

William Byard Lancaster (born August 6, 1942 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † August 23, 2012 ) was an American saxophonist and flautist of avant-garde jazz .

Life

Lancaster, whose father and grandfather were amateur musicians, studied saxophone and flute as well as piano, singing, composition and conducting. He went to school with Kenny Barron and played with JR Mitchell and Jerome Hunter before studying at Shaw University from 1960 to 1963 , then at Berklee College of Music and the Boston Conservatory. From 1961 to 1964 he played with Dave Burrell and came to New York City in 1965 , where he first worked with Sunny Murray and was involved in his debut album. After appearing with Bill Dixon , he was a partner of Sun Ra from 1968 to 1971 at irregular intervals . From 1971 to 1977 he worked with McCoy Tyner , in addition he worked with the pianist Sonelius Smith in 1976 with the Wildflowers Loft Sessions ; he also played for some time with Larry Young , but also with Memphis Slim in Paris. In the early 1980s he recorded with Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society . Most recently he worked again from Philadelphia, including with David Eyges and the band Fonksquish and with Khan Jamal . He also worked as a concert organizer in Philadelphia.
