David Eyges

David MacAulay Eyges (born November 6, 1950 in San Francisco ) is an American jazz musician ( cello , composition ) and music producer .

Eyges, who grew up in Paris and Belmont (Massachusetts) , received piano lessons from the age of six; at the age of eleven he learned to play the cello. In 1966, in high school, he became familiar with jazz. He attended Boston University in 1968/69 , and then studied the cello with Benar Heifetz at the Manhattan School of Music . From 1972 on he was active as a musician in a wide range and played orchestral concerts as well as Broadway pieces and advertising recordings. In 1975 he began to lead jazz groups and to compose for them. He was the first to play an electrically amplified cello. Since the 1980s he has performed mainly in a duo, but also in a trio with musicians such as Byard Lancaster , Jeanne Lee , Paul Bley , Bruce Ditmas , Jaki Byard and Arthur Blythe . His duo with Byard Lancaster was the first improvisational ensemble to receive financial support from Chamber Music America (1984). He performed at Lincoln Center as well as at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival . He can also be heard on albums by Bob Moses and Cecil McBee .

As a composer, Eyges wrote a hundred works, seventy of which were recorded. He was co-producer of the eight-part portrait series Another Face of Jazz , which aired on National Public Radio . He also produced records for Oliver Lake , Kelvyn Bell , Rudy Linka and other musicians. In 2002 he started the label MidLantic Records .
