Grachan Moncur III

Grachan Moncur III. (Born June 3, 1937 in New York City ) is an American jazz trombonist .

biography

Moncur grew up in a musical family in Newark : his father Grachan Moncur II was also a jazz musician. Grachan III. studied music at the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School . During his studies he worked in the jazz department of the record label ABC-Paramount . Between 1961 and 1963 he was a member of Ray Charles' band and recorded with Art Farmer and Benny Golson . He then settled in New York to work with Jackie McLean , Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins, as well as with his own band (including Bobby Hutchersonand Tony Williams ) to play free jazz, which, however, is clearly based on his role model JJ Johnson . With the latter two as well as Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan he played on November 21, 1963 for Blue Note Records Evolution as the first album under his own name. Shortly before that he was on McLean's album Destination ... Out! essentially involved. A second album, Some Other Stuff , followed in 1964. Subsequently (1967 to 1969) he was a member of Archie Shepp's groups , with whom he a. a. recorded the album The Way Ahead and worked as a composer, but also played in the 360 Degree Music Experience of drummer Beaver Harris , with Marion Brown and with Dave Burrell . With the Jazz Composer's Orchestra he recorded the record Echos of Prayer in 1974 . He then worked as a teacher in Newark and played there with the organist John Patton . Further recordings were made with Frank Lowe , Butch Morris , Khan Jamal , Sunny Murray , William Parker and Cassandra Wilson . In 1986 he toured Europe with the Paris Reunion Band . In 2004 he released his one-octet Exploration album that included Tim Hagans and Gary Bartz .
