Janice Robinson (trombonist)

Janice Robinson (born December 28, 1951 in Clairton , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz trombonist who works primarily in big bands .

Robinson grew up in the industrial town of Clairton in Allegheny County , played in school bands and in the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra during her training. As a teenager she had television appearances on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and the TV show by Bill Cosby on NPR . She studied trombone with Emory Remington and arrangement with Ray Wright at the Eastman School of Music ; in addition, she worked as a freelance musician in Rochester and toured with Chuck Mangione (who made the first recordings in 1973) and the American Wind Symphony .

After arriving in New York in 1973, she worked with Clifford Thornton and Grachan Moncur III in the Jazz Composer's Orchestra ; In 1974 she became a member of Clark Terry's big band . In 1975/76 she toured Japan with the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , then in Europe with the Orchestra of Gil Evans (1976). In the following years she played in the big bands of Buddy Rich , Dizzy Gillespie , Billy Taylor , Marian McPartland , Slide Hampton , in the Jazzmobile All Star Big Band, also with McCoy Tyner , George Gruntz and Mercer Ellington . Under her own name she presented the album Rosebrass with a quintet , which she recorded with a. a. Doug Harris , Michael Cochrane , Onaje Allan Gumbs , Lonnie Plaxico , Greg Maker , Newman Baker and Louis Nash . In the field of jazz, she was involved in 37 recording sessions between 1973 and 2007. a. also with David "Fathead" Newman , Lionel Hampton , Frank Foster , Woody Shaw , Jimmy Owens , Grant Green , Kazumi Watanabe , Carmen McRae , Idris Muhammad , Dexter Gordon and Sarah Vaughan .
