Jymie Merritt
Jymie Merritt (* 3. May 1926 , † 11. April 2020 ) was an American jazz - bassist of hard bop . He played with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers .
Live and act
Jymie Merritt grew up in Philadelphia , where he received classical training as a double bass player . He became known as a member of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , to which he belonged from 1958 to 1962; During this time he worked on their Blue Note albums Moanin ' (1958), A Night in Tunisia and Mosaic (1961). In the late 1950s he had a short-lived quintet with saxophonist Bobby Jaspar ; He also accompanied Benny Golson in 1958 on his album The Other Side of Benny Golson and Wayne Shorteron his early Vee Jay album Wayning Moments in 1962.
In later years Jymie Merritt was involved in recordings of Max Roach's Quintet (1965–1968) and the Lee Morgan Quintet (1970–1972), such as Morgan's album Live at the Lighthouse . He also played in Dizzy Gillespie's Big Band and Quintet, as well as with Al Haig and Archie Shepp .
In addition to his work in promoting young talent in his hometown, he played regularly from 1998 to 2005 in a jazz duo at The Prime Rib restaurant in Philadelphia.
Merritt is considered to be the inventor of the Ampeg bass , a hybrid of an electric and acoustic bass instrument.
