John Swana

John Swana (* 1962 ) is an American jazz - trumpet and flugelhorn player .

Swana is considered a traditionalist of the hard bop genre, his style is heavily influenced by Lee Morgan and Kenny Dorham after Cook / Morton , although he counts Tom Harrell as his main role model.

He started his career in local clubs in his hometown of Philadelphia . He played in big bands , organ combos and eventually with musicians of the hard bop mainstream.

At the end of 1990 he made his debut album Introducing John Swana on the Criss Cross Label with accompanying musicians such as Benny Green , Bill Pierce , Peter Washington and Kenny Washington , with original compositions and material by Dorham and Wayne Shorter . In late 1991, John Swana & Friends followed with Tom Harrell , Mulgrew Miller , Ira Coleman and Billy Drummond .

Swana played in the quartet of guitarist Peter Leitch in 1991 and worked on Chris Potter's debut album in 1992 ( Presenting Chris Potter ) and played with Eric Alexander . In his numerous band projects in the 1990s Swana worked with Chris Potter, Steve Davis , Bootsie Barnes , David Hazeltine , in 1997 he played in Peter Herborn's big band ( Large One ) and on Benny Golson's album Remembering Clifford . In 2000 and 2004 he recorded the albums Philly Gumbo, Vol. 1 & 2 with local Philadelphia musicians . In the early 2000s he worked with a band made up of guitarist Jesse van Ruller , bassist John Patitucci and drummer Eric Harland ( On Target ).

Swana has also worked with musicians such as Ralph Bowen , Orrin Evans , Charles Fambrough , Herwig Gradischnig , Jimmy Greene , JD Walter , Joel Weiskopf and Bobby Zankel .
