Herwig Gradischnig

Herwig Gradischnig (born December 18, 1968 in Bruck an der Mur ) is an Austrian jazz saxophonist .

Life

Herwig Gradischnig is the son of the teacher of the same name and Robert Musil researcher Herwig Gradischnig (* 1944). He studied saxophone at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz.

Gradischnig has been a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra since 1993 . He has also performed with the Jazz Big Band Graz , the EBU Big Band , the NDR Big Band , the Regensburg Jazz Orchestra, the Würzburg Jazz Orchestra, the LA Concert Jazz Orchestra, the Richard Oesterreicher Big Band, the Blue Note Big Band, the Pepe Lienhard Big Band, the European Jazzorchestra and the Nouvelle Cuisine group . Gradischnig plays as a sideman with musicians such as Hannibal Marvin Peterson , Ingrid Jensen , Benny Bailey , Rob Bargad , Garry Dial ,Kenny Wollesen , Fritz Pauer , Karl Ratzer , Kent Carter , Howard Curtis , Jimmy Cobb , John Swana , Marianne Mendt , Marc Abrams , Paulo Cardoso , Adrian Mears , Mario Gonzi , Andy Scherrer , Bill Carrothers , Johannes Enders , Christian Havel , Joris Dudli , Manny Duran , Wolfgang Puschnig , Matthieu Michel , Yves Robert , Michel Godard , Jean-Paul Céléa , Karl Prosenik , Alexander Fischer , Joschi Schneeberger and Heiri Känzig .

In 1998 he received the Hans Koller Prize in the Newcomer of the Year category .

From the beginning of the 2000s Gradischnig directed various projects of his own, including Fine Four, Joinville (with Adrian Mears , Oliver Kent , Marc Abrams and Mario Gonzi ), the quartet Playing Deep (with Kent, Abrams and Gonzi), Ghost Trio (with Matthias Pichler and Klemens Marktl ), Organic Mode (with John Swana, Rob Bargad and Klemens Marktl) and The Engrad (with Johannes Enders, Thomas Stabenow and Howard Curtis). With the duo album Day Dream with the pianist Oliver Kent he won the Hans Koller Prize for album of the year in 2004 .
