Jean-Paul Céléa

Jean-Paul Céléa (born January 6, 1951 in Skikda , Algeria) is a French double bass player who is active in both jazz and new music .

After training at the conservatories in Strasbourg and Paris , Céléa was a member of the Strasbourg Philharmonic between 1973 and 1976 , before he performed compositions by Pierre Boulez , Luciano Berio and Karlheinz Stockhausen as a soloist in the Ensemble Intercontemporain . Since 1977 he has been a member of Diego Masson's Ensemble Musique Vivante . He has also been playing jazz since 1976, first in a duo with François Couturier , then also in the groups of Jacques Thollot , Michel Portal , Daniel Humair , François Jeanneau , Steve Lacy , André Ceccarelli , Joachim Kühn and Dominique Pifarély . In the early 1980s he went on a world tour with John McLaughlin , in 1984 he played with the Vienna Art Orchestra , then with Anouar Brahem , with Eric Watson , with the Accroche Note ensemble , in a trio with David Liebman and Wolfgang Reisinger and with John Surman .

Between 1992 and 1997 he was professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon . Since 1998 he has been a double bass professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris . In 2003 he was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres .
