James "Jimmy" Greene (* 1975 in Bloomfield , Connecticut ) is an American jazz - saxophonist .

Live and act

Greene's father, James Greene Senior, was an amateur saxophonist and songwriter; at the age of six Jimmy began playing the alto saxophone. At the age of 15 he met Jackie McLean in Hartford , who taught him during high school. He recorded his debut album with musicians from McLean's Ensemble, trombonist Steve Davis and drummer Eric McPherson . He then studied at Hartt College; In 1996 he was runner-up in the Thelonious Monk competition . After graduating in 1996, he moved to New York to play in Avishai Cohen's sextet ; He also took part in Jason Lindner and Omer Avital sessions at the Smalls jazz club . A number of albums for the Criss Cross Jazz label followed , including Introducing Jimmy Greene ; He also took part in recordings by Claudia Acuña , Tom Harrell , Mario Pavone , Jeremy Pelt , Ralph Peterson , Jim Rotondi and the new jazz composer Octet around David Weiss . In 1998 he worked on Horace Silver's album Jazz Has a Sense of Humor . In the 2000s he taught at the University of Manitoba Music School .

family

His wife Nelba is a niece of the politician and current mayor of Maunabo Jorge Marquez . Greene's six-year-old daughter Ana was killed in the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in late 2012 .
