Thelonious Monk Competition
The Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition (Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition) is a jazz competition of the Thelonious Monk Institute, which was founded in 1986 by the family of Thelonious Monk and the philanthropist Maria Fischer in Washington DC. It is considered one of the most prestigious young jazz awards. The annual competitions are each dedicated to different instruments and also to composers. Some of the most famous jazz musicians sit on the changing juries. It was first awarded in 1987 (for the first three years only for piano according to the instrument of the namesake).
12 semi-finalists will be selected for the competition from among applicants from around the world. The winners can look forward to high prize money and a record deal. The competition was not held in 2016 and 2017.
