Jesse van Ruller (born January 21, 1972 ) is a Dutch jazz and fusion musician ( guitar ).

Act

Ruller completed his studies at the Hilversum Conservatory in 1995 (among others with Wim Overgaauw ) " summa cum laude ". In the same year he won (as the first European) the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington, DC (the jury included Jim Hall , Pat Metheny , John Scofield ). Since then he has played with Philip Catherine , Toots Thielemans , the saxophonist Seamus Blake (on "Circles" with Sam Yahel on the Hammond organ and the drummer Bill Stewart ), Peter Erskine , Roy Hargrove (on Ruller's album "Catch" 2000/2001, nominated for the Edison Prize), Tom Harrell , Mike Stern , George Duke , John Patitucci , Christian McBride , Joe Lovano , Piet Noordijk , Bert van den Brink , Benjamin Herman and Michiel Borstlap (project "Redux" with electronic beats and loops) . He played with the singers Fleurine and Francine van Tuinen (on their albums “Muzyka” 2005 and “Countrified” 2015) and in 2003 with Pat Metheny at the North Sea Jazz Festival . He has performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Simon Rattle and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, with the “ Metropole Orkest ” and the WDR Big Band Cologne . He also composed for the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra , with which he played regularly. He plays in the duo "Van der & Van" with the Dutch guitarist Maarten van der Grinten .

In 1996 his first CD "European Quintet" was released with Julian Joseph (piano) and Peter Less (tenor saxophone). Van Ruller played in his own trio with Martijn Vink (drums) and Frans van der Hoeven (bass) (album "Trio"). Since 2010 he has formed the Trio Chambertones together with the woodwind player Joris Roelofs and the bass player Clemens van der Feen . On the album Phantom (2015) he interpreted music by Joe Henderson in a trio with Clemens van der Feen and Joost van Schaik . He also worked with Jussi Lehtonen , Mikko Helevä and Joonatan Rautio (album "This Time"). He was also involved in the album Mulligan Moods (2008) by baritone saxophonist Jan Menu .

In 2001 and 2002 he was nominated for the Bird Award of the North Sea Jazz Festival.
