Sarah Schulman

Sarah Miriam Schulman (born July 28, 1958 in New York City ) is an American author, historian and university professor.

biography

Schulman teaches English at the College of Staten Island at the City University of New York . She lives openly as a lesbian. Schulman is the author of eleven published books: eight novels, two non-fiction books and one play. Schulman's first novels are set in the Lower East Side subculture of Manhattan .

From 1979 to 1982 Schulman was an activist for the organization CARASA (Committee for Abortion Rights and Against Sterilization Abuse).

In 1987 she founded the film festival The New York Lesbian and Gay Experimental Film Festival (currently MIXand ) together with film director Jim Hubbard . In the same year Schulman joined the organization Act Up .

  • 1989 Stonewall Book Award for the novel Without Delores .
  • 1999 Stonewall Book Award for the non-fiction book Stagetruck. Theater, AIDS and Marketing of Gay America .
