Stonewall Book Award
The Stonewall Book Award has been an annual literary prize for English-language LGBT literature and non-fiction (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) since 1971 . It is awarded by the American Library Association's Working Group on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender ( Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table ).
The Stonewall Book Award is the first ever international literature prize for this subject. Back then there were only a handful of books selected, but in 1995 more than 800 titles were nominated. The prize was originally awarded as a grassroots recognition award. It has been an official American Library Association award since 1986.
Every year in January, the English-speaking winners of the nominations received by the end of October of the previous year are announced. Awards will be presented in the form of a medal and financial recognition at the American Library Association's annual conference in June. Since 1990 the prize has been awarded in the categories literature ( Barbara Gittings Literature Award ) and non-fiction ( Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award ). In 2010, the Children's and Young Adult Literature Award was added.
The name of the award changed its name several times over the decades:
- 1971–1986: Gay Book Award
- 1987-1993: Gay and Lesbian Book Award
- 1994-1998: Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Book Award
- 1999–2001: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Book Award
- since 2002: Stonewall Book Award
