Howard Brown

Howard Fuller Brown (born July 24, 1920 in Arkona , Ontario ; † 2001 ) was a Canadian pianist, harpsichordist and music teacher.

Brown studied at the University of Toronto with Healey Willan and Leo Smith and at the Royal Conservatory piano with Lubka Kolessa and Boris Roubakine and music history with Arnold Walter . From 1949 to 1950 he taught piano at the Maritime Conservatory of Music in Halifax and from 1950 to 1953 at Mount Allison University , whose department for music he then headed until 1967. As a scholarship holder of the Royal Society of Canada , he studied piano with Harold Craxton and harpsichord with Valda Aveling in England in 1957 . From 1967 until his retirement in 1984 he headed the music department at Bishop's University . As a piano soloist and concert pianist, Brown traveled around Canada and performed with the CBC .
