NGC 4989 is a 13.3 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 135 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 65,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4975 , NGC 4990 , IC 855 , among others .
The object was discovered on April 17, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “F, S, iF, near a pretty bright star”.
