NGC 5009 is a 14.5 mag bright barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is an estimated 426 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 135,000 ly
. a. the galaxy NGC 4998 .
The object was discovered on April 26, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “2 vS stars at less than 1 ′ distance, with vF nebulosity between them”.
