NGC 4990 , also known as the Cocoon Galaxy , is a 13.9 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It has extensive HII regions with a high rate of star formation . The galaxy is estimated to be 138 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4975 , NGC 4989 , IC 855 , among others .
The object was discovered on March 23, 1865 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest .
