NGC 4974 is a 13.3 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 with pronounced emission lines in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 399 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years in diameter .
Together with NGC 4967 and NGC 4973 , they were discovered as the brightest members of a small group of six or seven galaxies in a single observation on April 14, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, the “Two nebulae [NGC 4973 & NGC 4974] Both vF, S. Place is that of second, the other is 3 'or 4' Sp "noted.
