NGC 4970 = IC 4196 is a 12.2 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation of Hydra and approximately 139 million light-years from the Milky Way center.
She was spotted twice; first on March 26, 1789 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “vF, pL, iF” (observation listed as NGC 4970 ); then on February 27, 1898 by Lewis A. Swift (listed as IC 4196 ).
